Common Questions PLAB
What are the processes involved in this PLAB route?
This route consists of one medical English test, known as OET and two academic based exams PLAB 1 and PLAB 2. PLAB 1 is the theoretical exam whereas PLAB 2 is the practical exam, similar to the OSCE.
What are the requirements for the PLAB program?
The basic requirement for this program is, the applicant should have at least an MBBS degree and be licensed to work as a clinical practitioner in Nepal. We suggest doctors to continue to work during this process. Exceptions can be made to appear PLAB exams due to the location of the exam centres. The other requirement is that the applicant should be having at least an experience as a clinical practitioner of 18 months in order to be registered in GMC (General Medical Council, UK).
Are all of the exams conducted here in Nepal?
No, not all of the 3 exams are held in Nepal. The OET can be given in Kathmandu, Nepal but the other PLAB exams should be given out of Nepal due to unavailability of the exam centres, i.e PLAB 1 in any countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Australia etc and PLAB 2 in the UK.
Who will be tutoring for OET and PLAB’s?
We have GMC registered doctors who will be teaching and guiding you in order to pass your tests. As the PLAB 2 preparation is the tough part in this program, this is a huge opportunity for the doctors from Nepal to prepare for the exam in advance in their home country before reaching the academy in the UK.
How long does it take to become a UK registered doctor through the PLAB pathway?
The time frame depends on various factors such as availability of the exam dates and location/country. The other main factor is the time occupied by the applicant for the preparation to appear these exams. Generally an applicant can complete all of these exams and become a UK registered doctor in around a year or little less or more than that.
What are the costs involved in the PLAB program?
The expenses can be divided into 3 categories, the exam fees, travel and accommodation costs and the service charge costs (if applicable). The exam fees include the OET with fee of AUD 587, the PLAB 1 with fee of GBP 239 and the PLAB 2 with fee of GBP 860. The travel and accomodation cost depends on where you will be appearing for your exams. Similarly, the service charge depends if you are taking preparation classes or processing through any agencies.
